About the author

Brian Christopher is the real son and only child of the author, who was tragically killed at the age of 17. Norma Jean often wondered what Brian was doing in his afterlife and took pen to paper to write out various scenarios, which led to her debut novel, BLACK ANGEL. Born from personal experience and fantasy, BLACK ANGEL is a book for all ages, but focuses on young people who face similar life situations of tragedy, grief, and dangers faced everyday. Realizing there is a need for books that reflect Black and Brown characters, Norma’s hope is that all readers will see themselves in the story and will laugh, cry and take inward reflection of their own lives and choose good over evil.

Norma is an avid reader and is a big fan of authors Nora Roberts, Dan Brown, David Baldacci, Tomi Adeymei, Octavia Butler and James Baldwin to name a few. Her favorite genres are fantasy and mystery, but will curl up with a good romance as well. Norma has published two non-fiction books that helped her and countless others heal after the death of her son, Brian, entitled, JOY COMES THIS MORNING, and JOY FOR A NEW DAY.

What our Readers are saying

Welcome to the very first issue of The Black Angel Letter.

I want to start at the beginning—not with angels or celestial realms, but with why this story exists.

Black Angel was born from grief, yes—but also from love. From the names we say too softly. From the stories we don’t always tell. From the question: What happens to the ones we lose too soon?

Brian Christopher, aka Black Angel, is my real son. He was shot and killed, at the age of 17, in a senseless shooting, on a hot summer night, in Rock Island, Illinois, about 3 hours from our home in Chicago. He was my only child. It’s been a long road for me to get here, where I can share my son with the world. Through my debut novel, Black Angel, I share him—not as a hero, but as a young man who deserved more time. Writing about him is an act of remembrance. Giving him wings is an act of hope.

This book is my way of saying: You mattered. You still matter.

In the months ahead, I’ll share more about Brian, the angels who guide him, and the world that refuses to forget him.

Before you go, I’d love to ask you something:
What draws you to stories about hope? Is there someone in your life that has left too soon?

You can reply and tell me—I read every message.

With heart,
Norma Jean
